Do gastric balloons work? Gastric Balloon Review

If you are trying to lose weight and are considering surgery, you have been given more options than ever for choosing a surgical procedure to combat obesity, with a gastric bypass and laparoscopic gastric band placement being a few options.

Despite the 2006 directive which required all Surgeries to have experienced surgeons and equipment, these methods of cosmetic procedures are still life threatening. Although complication rates have dropped by from 12.2% of patients to 10%, with the many thousands people undergoing these cosmetic procedures every year, that's a huge number of people who are experiencing complications.

If the ReShape Medical of San Clemente’s double balloon gets FDA approval, these figures could soon be changing.

Gastric Balloon Information

For patients who are not eligible for gastric bypass and band placement surgeries (usually those whose BMI falls outwith the guidelines for the procedures), or who are under 18, the double balloon system caters to a previously ignored niche.

  • How does it work?

surgeonThe double-balloon mechanism is inserted into a slimmers throat using thin tubing before being filled with saline. As these 2 oval sections are inflated, patients will begin to feel full.

Over time, with a smaller area available in the stomach for food, dieters will lose weight from the decrease in calorie intake.

More importantly, once slimmers achieve their target weight loss, this cosmetic device can easily by deflated and removed from the stomach without risk.

At the moment, this dual action balloon is scheduled to undergo its first medical study at the beginning of spring where 30 patients across 3 medical centers will be inserted with the balloon. Should it work, this study will be extended to 350 patients across ten surgeries and eventually will be put to the FDA for approval.

  • Is it safe?

It is undeniable that this device could essentially help thousands of obese patients who are either under 18 or suffer from diabetes, heart disease and muscle problems to lose those excess lbs, however this double balloon system has got far to travel before it is approved.

Twenty six years ago a similar single balloon system was produced by Garren-Edwards. However, with no backup membrane to protect it from punctures, this balloon was prone to leaking and entering into the small intestine where it caused serious blockages. As a result this product was quickly removed the market.
