Do Fad Diets Work For Permanent Weight Loss?

With obesity expected to affect over half of the population of the world by 2050, the reign of  ‘faddy diets’ and ‘quick fix weight loss diets’ has become more popular than ever before.

From the cabbage soup diet to the Quantum Wellness and 7-day Elimination diets, all of these dietary fads make the same claims: to speed up weight loss and increase metabolism permanently.

Do Fad Diets Work For Weight Loss?

Sometimes, but that depends on what your interpretation of “working” is. Most dieters following these fad diets experience immediate water weight loss of  1-2lbs which is replaced just as immediately when a normal diet is resumed.

90% of slimmers on these diets have reported a small weight loss reduction of just 1-3 pounds before plateauing after 2 weeks.

More disappointingly, once slimmers stopped using these dangerous diets they usually quickly regained all the weight they lost. You may even have experienced this disappointing phenomenon yourself.

Are Fad Diets Dangerous?

Whilst many diet fads can help you to achieve a modest amount of immediate weight loss, almost all of them cannot be used for over 2 weeks.

Depriving your body of the necessary nutrients required to ensure your organs receive the energy they need to work, may involve lowering your calorie consumption to less than 1,000 calories a day– less than half your recommended intake.

Supported by extreme workouts and unrelenting calorie checking, many of these said dietary fads run the danger of making you feel:

  • weak
  • tired
  • unable to think straight

And more worryingly, stop you from functioning properly – All of which are dangerous for your health.

How can you spot a diet fad?

•    Too good to be true claims
•    Lack of clinical trials
•    Elimination of one or more of the five food groups
•    Recommendations from medical professionals without reviews from other researchers

When picking a diet or a slimming pill, it is imperative to deeply research their benefits and shortcomings first before adding them into your eating habits.

If there is no proof that they can achieve real and credible weight loss results, then more often than not they are too good to be true.
