How to Recognize and Stop Emotional Overeating

If you are gaining weight but can't quite put your finger on the cause, it can be extremely frustrating. You might have fallen victim to emotional overeating which is a stealthy problem that can creep up on you. It involves eating without realizing you are, and eating without giving it a second thought.

Gradual weight gain

If week by week you are standing on the scales and see your weight creeping up, and you can't explain why, this is a key indicator that you are eating through your emotions.

You may not even be aware of your overeating. You might have the best intentions, exercising often and making healthier meals. But extra calories sneak in when you least expect it, especially when you are feeling down or stressed.

Sudden hunger pangs

Your emotions can affect your sense of hunger, giving a false sense of hunger when you experience negative emotions. The telltale signs are cravings for specific foods and immediate hunger for food.

If you were experiencing “true” hunger, that is natural hunger due to your body needing nutrients, then your experience wouldn't be an immediate urge for food, it would be a gradual wave of hunger.
