Do I Need To Buy A Gym Membership To Lose Weight?

Each January, people rush in great numbers to sign up for gym memberships. This is probably because these people (and probably their pet cats too!) have made New Years resolutions to lose weight or get fit.

Unfortunately the statistics are quite gloomy, with 95% of January gym joiners giving up on their memberships some of which they have already paid a year in advance for.

Now, I'm not against gyms. For some people, a gym is a great place for motivation and getting fit. However, you simply don't need to join a gym in order to lose weight.

Lose Weight Without Going To The Gym

All you have to do is to move more and eat less.

There's no need for fancy machinery and equipment from kettle-bells to rowing machines. Yes, they can be very effective when used regularly, but you don't HAVE to use them to lose weight.

The plan I'm going to suggest is one of the easiest available. It involves working out how many calories you burn each day, and subtracting 500 calories to get your “golden number” of calories to eat per day.

You should also walk for 30-60 minutes every day.

Walking first thing in the morning is the best time because your body will work on your fat stores for fuel. But squeeze in 30 minutes when you can and you'll still reap the benefits.

If that sounds too easy then ramp up your walks to 45 mins in the morning and 45 mins in the evening.

Sure, you might be a little out of breath walking up hills for example, but that's nothing compared to the panting and gasping you would have been doing at the gym.

I found that most people who come to me asking for weight loss advice don't get much exercise in their daily lives, if at all. So these quick walks are much more beneficial than sitting around doing nothing.

Working Out At Home

If you have extra money to spare (and don't worry if you don't) then invest in some dumbbells for your house because your body doesn't care where you workout, it only cares that you do something.

  • The advantage of working out at home is that you don't have to queue up to use equipment that is covered in other peoples sweat.
  • There will be cost savings and you will also save the time needed to travel to a gym.
  • There are less distractions at home and once bought, your equipment is yours for life, not just a few months.

Gym memberships are where the highest cost savings are made, as they often have minimum subscription periods and monthly fees.

exercise bikeAnother bonus is that you don't have to feel intimidated by the hardcore gym-goers who look like they have stepped off the cover of a fitness magazine!

The last thing you need is to feel intimidated, especially if you are unhappy with your body and that is why you are trying to lose weight.

As well as walking and optional small weight lifting, there are loads of exercises you can carry out at home for free.

An example would be calisthenics which involves squats, push-ups, burpees etc. You can get great videos on YouTube that show you how to do these properly, and put them into a routine.

If you carry out these exercises in a quick, interval circuit you will get your heart pumping faster and boost your metabolic rate, whilst burning calories of course.

Remember those fitness mag cover stars we talked about earlier? Even the best of them struggle when carrying out really fast interval training. This may be because they lack stamina which is a skill you should work on developing in your walks.

In summary, whatever your reason for wanting to avoid the gym (whether it be to avoid the high cost or to avoid intimidation) please know that you can still be healthy and lose weight without a gym membership.

Get Help With Your Workouts

There is a way to get an extra helping hand with building up the energy and stamina needed to workout at home. Most people who are trying to lose weight and are serious about their exercising use a type of diet pill known as a fat burner.

As you may be aware, there are literally thousands of fat burners available on the market so how do you know which one to buy? I highly recommend PhenQ as the best fat burner for you to take because it is known for it's safety and amazing weight loss results.
