Can Green Tea Help With Weight Loss? – Fat Burning Tea

Lots of us want to burn fat quickly but we don't want to go on an extreme diet and exercise regime. You can achieve some weight-loss results by limiting the amount of food that you eat but a further boost can be achieved with Green Tea supplements. Did you know that Green Tea can help with weight loss?

It is thought that Green Tea helps when you are trying to lose weight in a few main ways:

  1. Reducing appetite
  2. Increasing metabolism
  3. Giving a modest energy boost
  4. Suppressing fat absorption

That sounds ideal to me as these are the main things you should be looking for in a weight loss aid to help you tackle excess fat from all angles.

More energy makes exercise easier to face and a reduced appetite means you will want to eat less. So your own diet and exercise efforts will be boosted.

But I wanted to know if there was true concrete evidence behind using Green Tea as a weight loss aid or if it was all a bit of a scam without real science behind it.

The Health Benefits of Green Tea

Originating in China and Japan, Green Tea (made from Camellia sinensis leaves) has been made in a drinkable form for centuries. It contains a powerful antioxidant known as catechins in a higher concentration than any other tea type including oolong and black tea.

In the US drinking of Green Tea has increased by 60% in the last 10 years which shows just how popular it has become.

Recently in the west, it has been included as an ingredient in many fat-burning teas and diet pills including those from NOW Foods, Hard Rhino, and Nutrigold.

It is thought to have all sorts of health benefits including:

  • Reducing bad breath
  • Helping weight loss
  • Preventing diabetes
  • Reducing the visible effects of aging
  • Stopping hair loss

Many of the claims made of this type of tea are currently unproven and seem to be exaggerated (Green Tea cannot cure cancer as has been claimed by some for example), but the weight loss effects it has have some scientific evidence behind them.

Not everyone enjoys the bitter taste a cup of the green stuff has. So you can see why ready-made pills containing extracts are becoming more popular.

It appears that this ingredient when used in combination with other powerful weight loss ingredients, can gently yet effectively enhance your body's ability to burn off excess fat and help you to lose weight.

Scientific Evidence

There is a wealth of scientific evidence behind the claims that are made about Green Tea concerning its ability to induce weight loss.

With regards to claims being made that it can reduce appetite, one study was carried out by the University of Chicago. It found that rats injected with EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) derived from Green Tea leaves had a lower appetite and ate 60% less food.

We have to be skeptical and ask if the same effects would be seen in humans. Anecdotally this would seem to be true as people have reported a reduced appetite after drinking Green Tea.

There have been human studies carried out in obese people. Over a period of 12 weeks, the participants in one study lost 0.2 to 3.5 kg more than those in the control group.

In another study, the author concluded that:

“Green tea preparations appear to induce a small, statistically non-significant weight loss in overweight or obese adults”

So it would seem that this isn't a miracle drug that will be the solution to all of your weight loss worries. It will be able to help a little especially combined with other proven weight loss ingredients.

green tea as a metabolism boosterGreen Tea As A Fat Burner

Green tea is known for its fat-burning properties, and you can find several types of green tea blends. Some of these are better at burning fat than others.

Also, they offer different claimed health benefits such as cholesterol-reducing properties and reducing acne.

One way in which Green tea works is by increasing your metabolism and helping your body to burn more fat. It is known to be safe and is an easy way to lose weight simply by replacing the coffee or tea you drink every day with green tea.

Some people find this more pleasant than taking diet pills. Others prefer Green Tea supplements in pill form because they don't like the bitter taste of tea.

Green Tea Side Effects

Green tea is judged as likely safe by WebMD when it is consumed moderately by healthy adults.

It is always wise to consult your doctor before taking any supplements containing natural ingredients like this, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking medication.

It contains 2% to 4% caffeine when taken in tea form which may affect some people in the following ways:

  • Headache
  • Tremor
  • Sleep problems
  • Nervousness

However, most Green Tea extracts included in diet pills do not include the caffeine content of the leaves so it should be side effect free for most people.
