Are Prescription Weight Loss Pills Like Phentermine Dangerous?

You might be one of the many people who are uncertain about using diet pills because you have heard horror stories that include unfortunate people dying because of terrible side effects. Even if you realize that these cases are a one-off and extremely unlikely to happen, you might be put off because of milder side effects: from shaking hands to nausea.

prescription diet pillsWhat is a website about diet pills doing putting down the very products it sells? you may ask. The honest truth is, I know there are scammy and dangerous diet pills out there, so I have spent years filtering out the safe ones that actually work from the dangerous ones.

One thing to remember is that even if they are prescription diet pills, they aren't guaranteed to be safe.

I decided to investigate prescription only weight loss pills like Phentermine and Orlistat for safety. And the results were shocking!

Phentermine Safety Profile

Phentermine is a stimulant drug that works by affecting your central nervous system to cause a series of effects that culminate in raising your metabolism. Some of these effects can cause side effects like shaking, insomnia, raised blood pressure and anxiety.

Unlike most diet pills you can take or leave by choice, Phentermine can be habit-forming leading to a state of addiction.

You may be able to live with the side effects listed above if you value losing weight more than increased anxiety, for example. After all, studies do show it is an effective drug for weight loss.

But at what cost? High profile cases of heart attacks, strokes and even death have shown up in the news over the years.

Orlistat Safety Record

Orlistat is an FDA approved diet pill used to block a percentage of the fat you eat from being absorbed by your digestive system. Mild side effects include flatulence, stomach pain and oily stools.

One side effect of note, which most people don't talk about because it can be considered embarrassing, is oily flatulence that can stain undergarments. This usually happens if you eat a particularly fatty meal after taking Orlistat because of the way in which the pill works.

If that wasn't bad enough, the FDA have issued a statement that Orlistat has been linked with liver damage (1). I'm not a medical expert but I would say err on the side of caution if you have a history of liver problems if you want to take Orlistat.

What Should I Look Out For When Buying a Diet Pill?

First of all, you want to look for a good side effect profile. Your comfort level comes into play here, as some people can put up with some “jitters” after taking a fat burner, for example, whereas others can't stand the feeling of unrest that these pills can give you.

Also, keep in mind any health problems you may have. If you have diabetes, depression, heart problems or even if you take medication, it is best to get professional help before starting to take a diet pill.

What Diet Pills are Recommended for Safety?

If you don't want to take powerful prescription only diet pills that can have severe side effects, you could look for a weight loss supplement that is gentler on your system that you can buy online.

As I said before, not all pills are created equal. There is a difference between buying something known to be dangerous online and buying a well-known supplement from a trusted source.

proactol xs bottleIf you are looking for a diet pill that has the minimum amount of reported side effects, I would suggest Proactol XS. It has been around for years and has won a cult following of fans who have lost significant amounts of weight using this pill without facing unpleasant side effects.

It works a bit like Orlistat but there is no so called “treatment effect” because it is gentler on your system, containing natural, vegan ingredients.
